A friend of mine introduced me to a great source of wood slabs from a saw mill in South Jersey. They have a nice variety of wood types, of all sizes.
I thought it would be nice to pick out a few slabs that spoke to me, and feel out how they are going to develop, based on their original shape.
I've become a shop steward at The Factory, in Collingswood, NJ. I volunteer my time to give tours, answer phone calls, help members with the operation of shop machinery, and keep the shop clean.
They have a really great wood and metal shop, as well as studios for startup companies.
I have been experimenting with the lathe machines, learning how to set them up and feel how the tools react to different types of wood. I am making shaving razor handles, and tap handles. These are still a work in process, and prototypes.
I built this for a design competition, at Monkey Mill in Frenchtown, NJ. The challenge was to see what you could do with wood slabs from Monkey Mill, as a way to promote what they have to offer, and the different types of project one can make with their product.
Being an avid home brewer and lover of craft beer, I wanted to make something that would hold my growlers, and larger bottles that I hold on to for a special occasion.
